Haltwhistle Interpretation Panels

Haltwhistle Interpretation Panels

Differentia was appointed to design and produce interpretation materials for the Connecting People to the Past initiative. The project will complement other projects being carried out in Haltwhistle e.g. Town Improvement Scheme and the Haltwhistle Burn Interpretation Project to improve the physical appearance of Haltwhistle and provide better orientation and interpretative information. In addition it will help enhance the visitor experience and engender a sense of local pride in the heritage of the town.

The overall benefits of the project will boost the town’s visitor economy.

These interpretation elements include:

  • Outdoor Panels – the original brief called for 6 x GRP Panels, but after our site visit and engagment with the client we suggested that we use Tactile Zinc Etched Panels. These are more in keeping with the look and feel of the town as well as providing a long lasting and robust finish.
  • Market Place Centre Feature – a Centre of Britain feature was asked for. After research and design we have produced a one metre bronze disc that uses visual elements that also appear on the outdoor panels and leaflets.
  • Leaflets – we created a suite of literature that pulls together additional information as well as linking to the outdoor panels.

The concept - we were asked to focus on Haltwhistle as the Centre of Britain. However we felt that there was more to offer than simply a geographic story and we have postioned Haltwhistle as the Centre of Britain from a Historical perspective. We have done this by connecting historical strands of Celtic Monks, Romans, Border Reivers, Industrial Revolution, Quakers and Industrialist, Trades and Retailing.
